To add to last month’s article, here are more ways you can enjoy baseball and its heritage in the Cincinnati area, where the first openly all-professional baseball team was formed. These are outside downtown. Crosley Field can be found in Blue Ash, Ohio. The reproduction was dedicated in 1988, and can be seen to the south as you drive along I-275.

'Big Dog' Brooks pitches for vintage base ball team
Dick “Big Dog” Brooks pitches for Cincinnati. He pitches for the 1869 Cincinnati Redstockings, the first and most visible of the local vintage baseball teams. The team plays a schedule of games throughout the Greater Cincinnati area, in addition to making appearances in the Reds’ Opening Day Parade and at Great American Ballpark in front of the mosaic mural depicting the original Cincinnati Redstockings team.

Orienteering, described as “cunning running, is an activity that can be a race or an easy trail walk in the woods. It can be done competitively or for recreation. Orienteering is an activity that uses a map and a compass to find hidden markers in a wooded area.

Geocaching-the real life treasure hunt game
A way to make outdoor walks or hikes interesting, more fun, and sometimes challenging is to do geocaching. It is like a real life outdoor treasure hunt. In geocaching, you search for hidden caches, or containers, with the assistance of a GPS unit. The caches are fairly obvious or creatively hidden but not buried and there are probably hundreds within a short drive from where you live.

Volunteering has many rewards
Do you have some time to spare? Do you have information, knowledge or education to share? Join the ranks of volunteers. Many volunteers are retired and looking for a constructive use of their free time. Others work full or part-time elsewhere. There are a variety of local volunteering opportunities that includes museums, halls of fame, sports tournaments, schools, children’s sports teams and churches.

I consider myself a Renaissance man since my interests, hobbies, and education include science, history, the arts, sports and the outdoors.

I am a professional freelance writer and licensed teacher in Southwest Ohio. I presently make my a portion of my living as a writer, teacher, photographer, and lecturer.

As a writer, I have had non-fiction, how-to, biographical, and feature articles published in national and local magazines, local papers, and the internet.

I have converted some of those articles into continuing education and special interest classes that have been offered at colleges, libraries, and senior citizen centers. The classes that I create, design, write, and market cover a variety of subjects, including history, sports history, hobbies, pop culture, recreational activities, and technology. They are organized, well-written, and include a presentation that may have photos, video, sound, and screen captures.
